Phlebotomy

Introduction:

The basic healthcare worker/ Phlebotomist program offers a sequence of courses that provides coherent and rigorous content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical knowledge and skills needed to prepare for further education and careers in the health science career cluster; provides technical skill proficiency, and includes competency-based applied learning that contributes to the academic knowledge, higher-order reasoning, and problem-solving skills, work attitudes, general employability skills, technical skills, and occupation-specific skills, and knowledge of all aspects of health science career cluster. The purpose of this program is to prepare students for employment as phlebotomists SOC Code 31-9097 Phlebotomists, All other.

Student Assessment:

  • Students enrolled in the PSAV program are assessed using the following methods:
  • Competency-based multiple choice tests. Students must pass with a grade of 70% or better in all mandatory exams
  • CPR and First Aid Course
  • Student activity and/or observations with written feedback
  • Complete a Professional Resource File
  • Final Exam. Questions related to possible Healthcare scenarios.

Registration Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED obtained from institutions accredited and recognized by U.S. Department of Education and submit documentation as proof. High school diplomas issued by private schools that are registered with the Florida Department of Education will also be accepted. If high school diploma earned outside the U.S., it must be translated by someone who is a member of the American Translators Association, an approved accredited college/university.
  • Must have a valid email address
  • TABE test (available at MSA)

Course Hours:

  • Basic Healthcare Worker-  90 Hours
  • Phlebotomist- 75 hours theory including first 45 hours mandatory to start working and 30 hours of clinical experience
